Aluminium and environment

Aluminium is famous because of its environmental friendlyness. More than two thirds of primary aluminium is produced by hydroelectric power minimising emissions and natural resources use.
Aluminium's lightweight and overall excellent in use performance, together with it's recyclability, ensure that the life-cycle of many products are enhanced.

Aluminium is 100% recycable, again and again! One of the inherent qualities of aluminium is the fact that this metal can be recycled after its use without any loss of quality.

The recycling process only requires 5% of the energy needed to produce primary aluminium. With developments in legislation and the increasing number of end-use markets (notably packaging, automotive and building products), recyclable aluminum continues to play an important and growing role in the industry and for our customers.

That are important reasons for us to use a high percentage of recycled aluminium in our production. METALSCREEN owned recycling facilities to ensure that scrap metal and used aluminium is collected and brought back into the material cycle.

Recycled aluminium has the same characteristics and qualities like primary aluminium and can be re-used in all applications. And in practice? Recycling is a reality, saving natural resources and generating economic value.

CORROSIONPROOF suitable also for external use and humidity wet place, swimming pools, sauna, steam bath, fitness centers and kitchens.

ALUMINIUM - THE MATERIAL OF CHOICE
Excellent processing qualities
Long life
Easy to recycle
2/3 lighter than steel
Optimum surface finishing

Tomorrow`s products require materials fulfilling the highest demands: lightweight, yet robust, easy to work, yet suitable for the whole host of applications, at the same time economical in manufacturing and use.

Hardly any other material can meet all these requirements as well as aluminium, thanks to considerable energy savings in the course of a long service life, mainly due to its lightweight. Aluminium is geared towards the future: Aerospace solutions would be unthinkable without aluminium, in architecture, transport, electronics and many other fields, lightweighting has become a vital necessity and an important aspect in the climate change efforts.
A special advantage of used aluminium products is their excellent ability to be reutilised. Without any deterioration in quality, the same or other equally high quality products can be made from recycled aluminium.

Modern aluminium alloys are around two thirds lighter than steel and can withstand extreme thermal and mechanical strain. Depending on alloy, strength and surface, these can be processed differently, are corrosion-resistant and will last for decades.
Economic and ecological bonus points, achieved by efficiency in production and low maintenance costs.

COIL COATING ECOLOGICALLY

The pre-painted aluminium sheet for the METALSCREEN ceilings is produced using the coil-coating process – a technology that is unique in its approach to the environment and scarce resources.

The use of chemicals and dyes is reduced to a minimum thanks to the special pretreatment and roller application process. When stoving the lacquer, extracted solvents are combusted and fed back into the process as heat. This ensures remains well below the statutory emission thresholds. The result is a coating that combines ideal processing qualities as e.g. adhesion or formability with excellent resistance to corrosion.

THE RECYCLING PROCESS

It currently takes around 13.5 MWh of electricity to produce one ton of primary aluminium.

Concentrating solely on primary production, however, overlooks the fact that the energy used remains stored in the metal and is "reactivated" during the recycling process. As a result of the low melting point (660°C), only 5 % of the energy originally used is required to recycle aluminium.

Over and above these processes for recycling manufacturing and operating materials, an efficient aluminium recycling industry has been recycling aluminium for decades. In 2003, worldwide production of recycled aluminium amounted to 7.7 million tons (EU 2.4 million tons, Germany 680,400 tons) or around 25 % of the total aluminium production that year (approx. 75 % was accounted for by primary aluminium). This proportion is on the increase in most industrial countries.

Aluminium is ...

A: collected .... B: molten .... C: cast into ingots
D: rolled to coils .... E: pre-painted

Aluminium is an energy “savings bank“
Aluminium recycling only requires 5% additional energy
Aluminium recycling protects resources
The proportion of recycled aluminium is worldwide about 25%

Ecological enviroment ceilings systems

METALSCREEN ceilings "Eco Systems" bring the benefits of quality aluminium ceilings within the reach of mainstream project budgets. These products have been selected from the extensive range of standard METALSCREEN ceilings and are available from a network of specialist distributors and contractors.
Manufactured to the highest standards METALSCREEN ceilings have a life cycle in excess of 25 years and when compared with traditional ceiling tile materials offer outstanding cost benefits to the building owner.
The range includes a selection of module sizes, suspension grids and perforation patterns to accomodate the aesthetic and performance requirements of the user.

The history of aluminium

In 1807, the Englishman Davy discovered aluminium. At Les Baux in 1821, the Frenchman Berthier came across bauxite ore, the raw material for industrial aluminium production.

Pure aluminium particles were isolated for the first time in 1845 by the Göttingen Professor Friedrich Woehler. He was able to determine its main properties such as density, conductivity, corrosion resistance, etc.

It was only in 1886 - when Hall / Héroult received a patent for the electrolysis - that aluminium could be produced in larger quantities leading to lower aluminium prices. Research was thus able to improve the properties of aluminium, e.g. by using alloys.

In just 100 years, aluminium has developed from an expensive luxury into a versatile and widely used metal. Aluminium`s attractiveness is reflected by its increasing global demand. Consumption has more than doubled since 1970. In the future a significant increase is anticipated.

Third most common element of the earth's crust
• "Alum", aluminium was used for medicines and vegetable dyes as early as 2000 BC
Pure aluminium particles "as big pinheads" were isolated for the first time by the Goettingen

Why is coil coating?

Coil Coating means a continuous process within the aluminium substrate gets degreased, chemically pre-treated and coated.
The paint, an organic solvent or water-borne system, is applied through rolls.
In opposite of the post painting the coil will be first painted and than further processed.

Humidity, Hygiene, Fire, Environments

HUMIDITY
Because of aluminium composition METALSCREEN ceilings are valid also in humid environments. METALSCREEN range is suitable for installation in high relative humidity condition, for example quick realization buildings, often alternation of hot and cold buildings, buildings with a great concentration of people, etc.

HYGIENE
•STERILE ENVIRONMENTS
METALSCREEN aluminium ceilings are suitable for environments where high hygiene an sterility properties ae required, such operating rooms, pharmaceutics industries, laboratories etc.
•ELECTRONIC AND DATA PROCESSING INDUSTRIES

•ALIMENTARY ENVIRONMENTS
METALSCREEN aluminium ceilings riles are suitable for environments where high hygiene conditions are required, such as kitchen, alimentary industries, specific shops like butcheries and fish shops etc., because of their mould and bacterium resistance and their washable surface.

FIRE BEHAVIOUR
"Fire reaction" is the fire grade performance of a material. That's why, material have been classified in different class from 0 (for example marbles, iron) to (for example wood) according to their attendance to burning. All metal ceiling (aluminium and steel) are class "0" (incombustible) as per D.M. 14.1.1985.
